Chilling and exploring Bogota
Went on a bicycle tour ( well, what did you expect? ) of the city with an excellent guide who gave us a broad overview of Colombian politics, history, art, architecture and culture combined with visits to fruit markets, coffee factories, street art spots and a game of Tejo that involves drinking beer whilst throwing heavy chunks of metal at a clay target that literally has explosives embedded in it. Points scored for hitting the target and explosions!
Tourist excursion up the mountain for spectacular night views of the city somewhat let down by an excess of very tacky illuminated festive/Christmas paraphernalia.
Excellent free visit to the Botero Art museum housing art by Dali, Miro, Picasso, Botero, Monet and Matisse to name but a few. Highly recommended if you make it to Bogota. Another excellent museum is the gold museum with a huge collection of pre-Columbian mainly gold artefacts. Astounding levels of craftsmanship and art, some of it produced more than a 1000 years ago.
We’ve also been busy researching our back country cycle tour of the Colombian highlands with the help of maps, local knowledge and google maps and street view. It is amazing what tiny dirt roads google seems to have got their car to drive along……… What a job. A googled road…..

Ohhhh so good to see some familiar pics. So good to hear positive things about my city and my country. Still….. do look after yourselves. It is still Southamerica ….
And don’t miss eating at Crepes and Waffles!!!! Best crepes you will ever have, their salad bar is also pretty good, their natural juices are the best (try guanabana with milk and feijoa with water) and the best ice creams too!!! And it is very reasonable. Therey are dotted around all over the city and in all major cities in the country. Keep enjoying yourselves!!!
We will do that! The fruits we tried on the bike tour in the market were amazing. I need to write down all there names but I’ve already been to buy that one that is yellow and looks like passionfruit inside. Delicious. And the dragonfruit……..
All the travellers we meet have been so positive about there visit to Colombia. Some of them have returned for a second visit. I think it is good to be here right now.
How amazing is that google track! So different to travel 25 (eek) years ago. Will you be visiting Tierra Dentro? I also remember a gorgeous cathedral that spanned a gorge near the Ecuadorean border. Have fun and be safe guys xxx
Looks good. I particularly like the photos of the street art.
Glad you arrived safely with bikes intact. It all looks amazing – love the street art and the artifacts – some look interesting if not gruesome shall we say? We were wondering how it was going when the rest of us met on Sunday – missed you! But can’t compete with Colombia!
Mum xx
